In traditional Chinese and Indian medicine, people have the habit of green Tea to control bleeding, heal wounds, aid digestion, improve heart and health, and regulate body temperature.

Studies suggest that green tea may benefit weight loss, liver disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and more.

However, it’s important to note that more evidence is needed before scientists can prove these possible health benefits.

Cancer Prevention

Some cancer rates tend to be lower in countries with high green tea consumption. However, human studies have not found consistent evidence that green Tea reduces overall cancer risk.

A 2020 database review of human epidemiological and experimental studies found inconsistent results and limited evidence for the benefit of green tea consumption in reducing cancer risk. The researchers evaluated 142 completed studies with 1.1 million participants.

However, topical application of green tea polyphenol extracts may help defend the skin from UVB radiation. A review of in vitro, in vivo, and human studies showed the potential benefit of tea polyphenols in the chemoprevention of UVB-induced cancer.

Animal and test-tube cell studies have suggested some beneficial effects on the following cancers:

  • breast
  • bladder
  • ovarian
  • colorectal (bowel)
  • esophageal (throat)
  • lung
  • prostate
  • skin
  • stomach

The aggregate results of numerous human studies have led to inconsistent results and limited evidence for the benefits of drinking green Tea on overall cancer risk.

Weight Loss

A review found that the catechins in green Tea and caffeine may increase energy metabolism, which can lead to weight loss.

Another meta-analysis of several different mechanisms of Tea polyphenol-induced weight loss suggested that catechins and caffeine elicited weight loss effects synergistically and were not the result of caffeine alone.

However, the impact of green tea consumption on weight loss is doubtful to be of clinical importance. Most studies showing slight changes in metabolism used green tea abstracts with extremely high concentrations of catechins.
