What Are Foot Peels?

A foot peel is a chemical peel for your feet. A sticky mixture of natural extracts and peeling acids is applied once. The acids are generally salicylic acid, glycolic acid.

Dermatologists use alike chemical peels to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots on the face, hands, and chest. They also use scrubs to treat acne, blotchy skin, and sun-damaged skin.
But instead of fighting the signs of aging, a foot scrub simply removes dead skin from your feet. And instead of going to a dermatologist’s office for treatment, a foot peel is a treatment you can do yourself at home.

How Do Foot Peels Work?

During a foot peel, exfoliating acids penetrate the top layer of skin, breaking the bonds that hold skin cells together. A few days after the treatment, small pieces (sometimes large plumes) of dead skin fall off the feet.
Foot peels are very popular because they are inexpensive and easy to use. Does it work like this:
Open the package and follow the instructions. You apply the mixture to your feet and cover them with a boot-like plastic mask for about an hour. After you take off your ankle boots, gently wash your feet with water.
You can soak your feet in water for an hour each night to speed up the exfoliation process, but it’s unnecessary.
Wait several days to a week to see results. In the meantime, do not rub, scrape or peel dead skin. A painful sore can result if the skin is not ready to peel off.
Dead skin begins to peel off your feet. (It’s best to wear socks during the process so you don’t get dandruff all over.)
If you go out in sandals, use sunscreen (at least SPF 30) on your feet. Since your feet have no top layer of skin, they are very sensitive to the sun’s UV rays.

Are Foot Scrubs Safe?

Foot peels are safe for most people. The skin on your feet is thick (and often calloused) and, therefore, not as sensitive as the skin on your face. The process doesn’t hurt.
Some people should not use foot scrubs. You should avoid them if:

  • Have open sores or wounds on your feet.
  • Are pregnant.
  • Are allergic to any of the ingredients on the label.
  • Have a history of diabetes.
  • Have eczema.
  • Have athlete’s foot.
  • Have psoriasis.
